Новый год - так много в этом слове!
И вечные мандарины, которых съел столько, что почти помер, но хочется еще. И все эти оливьешки, селедки под шубой и прочие составляющие традиционного завтрака первого января.
И Евгений Лукашин, который уже много десятилетий подряд случайно приезжает на: 3-я улица Строителей, дом 25, квартира 12 - да не в том городе.
И еще миллион гораздо более личных ассоциаций, атрибутов и воспоминаний, из которых и складывается для нас, жителей бывшего СНГ, новогодняя и рождественская атмосфера.
А как с этим за границей - в англоязычных странах, в частности? Мы можем судить об этом по фильмам и песням, конечно же. Но сегодня мы предлагаем вам заглянуть чуть глубже - и поговорить о традициях и способах празднования этих дней в англоговорящих уголках мира.
И - маленькое уточнение перед: как уже бывало несколько раз до этого, это - не просто статья, а текст “с сюрпризом и пользой”.
Сами традиции будут описаны на английском (да, тот самый аутентичный инглиш с оригинальных сайтов, не в пересказе русских знатоков). 2. Making gingerbread houses (имбирный домик) is also popular to make and eat at Christmas! Eggnog (напиток из взбитых яиц с ромом и сахаром) is a 'traditional' Christmas drink in the USA.
3. In the Southwest (юго-восточной части) USA, there are some special customs (традиции) similar (похожие) to those in parts of Mexico. These include 'luminarias' or 'farolitos' (привет, испанский язык farol - фонарь): which are paper sacks partly filled with sand (бумажные мешочки, частично наполненные песком) and then have a candle (свечка) put in them. They are lit on Christmas Eve and are put the edges of paths (по краям тропинок и дорожек). They represent 'lighting the way' for somewhere for Mary and Joseph to stay (чтобы осветить путь, чтобы дева Мария с Иосифом смогли найти дорогу к той самой пещере, в которой свершится чудо).
4. In the south of Louisiana, on Christmas Eve (в канун рождества), families in small communities along the Mississippi River light bonfires along the levees (the high river banks) to help 'Papa Noel' (the name for Santa in French as Louisiana has a strong historical connection with France) find his way to the children's homes!

Traditional Santas wear bright red suits (костюмы), lined with (отороченные) white fur and big black boots to fight off (чтобы побороть) the northern winter.
In Australia, it’s summer at Christmas time so you’re much more likely (с намного большей вероятностью увидите) to see a boardshort-wearing (носящего шорты для доски = для сёрфа) Santa on a surfboard.
So where will you see a surfing Santa? It’s not an official tradition, but if you find yourself (если обнаружите себя) on a beach on Christmas day, you’ll probably catch (вероятно, поймаете, наткнётесь на) an early morning surfer in a Santa hat.
2. Eating prawns
While our British and American friends are feasting (пируют) on roast turkey (жареной индейкой), baked potato (печёной картошкой) and hot chocolate, us Aussies are packing up the Esky (сумка-холодильник для пикника) for a picnic or setting up folding tables (устанавливают складные столики) to eat outside. Most families in Australia will send someone to do a ‘prawn run’ (креветочный забег - то есть метнуться и купить) in the morning.

Head down to your local markets (местные рынки) to buy the freshest (самые свежие) and biggest prawns for Christmas day.
3. Street parties
It’s summer in December in Australia, so street parties are very popular. Sometimes in the evening on Christmas Day, impromptu (незапланированные) street parties happen. Most people visit relatives on Christmas Day so the streets are full of families and kids.
Quiet roads (тихие дороги - машины в праздник явно меньше) on Christmas Day also usually mean (обычно означают) impromptu games of cricket.
4. Boxing Day barbecues
Boxing day (день - нет, не бокса, а подарков), the day after Christmas (то есть 26-е декабря), is traditionally another day of celebration (еще один день празднования) holiday for most Australians. It’s a great time to relax, soak up (“проникнуться”, впитать) the festivities and, perhaps after a little too much indulgence (поблажки) the day before, start on the post-Christmas diet (сесть на послерождественскую диету).
Once the family gatherings are over (семейные посиделки закончены), people usually catch up (стыкуются) friends’ houses on Boxing Day to watch (or not watch) the Boxing Day Test. This usually involves (предполагает, включает в себя) one group of people drinking beer with their eyes glued to the cricket (с глазами, “приклеенными” к трансляции крокета) and another group of people drinking beer and not watching the cricket (пьют и не смотрят на экран, хех).
5. Festive road trips
Depending on (в зависимости от того) where your family lives, Christmas Day may involve (включать в себя) a long road trip. Lots of Aussie (это - разговорный вариант слова Australian) families’ Christmas celebrations include a drive with the kids jammed together (“напиханные”, как селедки в банку) in the back seat (заднее сиденье).
Whether you’re visiting loved-ones (посещаете любимых) that live far away or you’re on vacation-mode (в режиме отпуска) and heading up (направляетесь) some of Australia’s favourite road trips, it’s sure everyone in the family will be re-aquainted (заново познакомится) with each other after this!
6. Carols by Сandlelight
Most cities in Australia host (имеет) their own Carols by Candlelight and there will usually be a few celebrity performers (несколько известных исполнителей, местных звёзд). Proceeds from the performance are usually donated to a charity (идут на благотворительность).
There’s often a main Carols By Candlelight (главный концерт “колядок”) performed in a major city (в главном, крупнейшем городе) but other cities will often have their own events too. Families pack picnics, blankets (одеялки) and mosquito spray (спрей от комаров) and spend the evening outdoors (на свежем воздухе) listening to music.
7. Christmas lunch
If we believe everything (верим всему) we see on television, it would appear (покажется) that most Christmas meals happen at dinner time (во время ужина). Not in Australia – we’re mostly Christmas lunch people (“обеденные люди”, не полуночники).
Christmas is an all-day affair (занятие на весь день) in Australia, with lots of eating, and time spent playing fun Christmas games for kids and big kids.
Christmas lunches in Australia are relaxed (расслабленные, без церемоний), and include breaks for a spot of cricket (игру в крокет - и тут он, снова)) or a splash (сеанс купания, splash - плескаться) in the backyard pool (бассейне на заднем дворе).
Christmas crackers (крекеры) are a must – as is the need to wear (необходимость носить) colourful paper crowns (бумажные короны) and tell bad-jokes from the goodies (леденцы) found within (которые находятся внутри - этих корон, надо полагать).
