С приходом зимы и холодов, с приближение Merry Christmas и Happy New Year хочется чего-то уютного, дающего чувство защищенности и тепла. А значит, самое время обратиться к классике - к тем произведениям, о которых каждый из нас бессчетное количество раз слышал (а может быть, даже и читал - например, в школе).
Но часто подобное ощущение “мне это знакомо” оказывается обманчивым: вы помните общую суть, но детали, тонкости и общий “вкус и запах” книги ускользают от вас. Нам эта особенность, в общем, на руку - ведь она дарит возможность окунуться в гарантированно великолепный мир!

Роман Чарльза Диккенса, главный герой которого - ребенок, мальчик по имени Оливер Твист. Жизнь Оливера полна злоключений и внезапных поворотов, чаще всего, не к лучшему: его мать умерла при родах в работном доме; сам Оливер растёт в сиротском приюте при местном приходе, средства которого крайне скудны. Голодающие сверстники заставляют его попросить добавки к обеду. За строптивость начальство отправляет Оливера в контору гробовщика, где мальчик подвергается издевательствам старшего подмастерья....
Вкратце говоря: Оливер доведется пережить много зло(при)лючений, но закончится все хорошо.
Почему эту книжку стоит почитать?
С одной стороны - да, события, в ней описанные, часто достаточно тяжелы. С другой - Чарльзу Диккенсу удавалось каким-то образом напитать теплом и общечеловеческой любовью даже самые мрачные уголки своих повествований.
Небольшая выдержка из текста, как обычно:
Chapter One: The Workhouse
A long time ago every town in England had a workhouse. This was a house for very poor people. Oliver Twist was born in a workhouse. His mother was a young woman. She was very ill when she came to the workhouse. A doctor and a woman were with her.
After Oliver Twist was born his mother said, "I want to see my baby and then die."
"You are too young to die," said the woman.
The doctor put the little baby in his mother's arms. She kissed the baby and died.
"She's dead," said the doctor.
"Poor dear! She came here last night. No one knows where she's from," said the woman.
The old woman began to dress the baby with very old clothes.
Oliver was alone in the world. He was an orphan. No one loved him.
When Oliver was small he lived in an orphanage with other orphans. He and the other children had very little food and very little love. Many of the children died because they were cold or hungry. Oliver survived but he was small and thin. His face was very white. On his ninth birthday Oliver left the children's home.

Если быть точным, то по словарному запасу эта книга скорее соответствует Pre-Intermediate (пред-среднему) уровню, третий уровень адаптированных книг Penguin Readers предполагает знание 1200 базовых слов. Но для студентов среднего уровня эта книга будет достаточно простой, чтобы во время ее прочтения можно было расслабиться, отдаться сюжету и действительно получить удовольствие от процесса.
Краткое описание книги, думаю, не понадобится; вместо этого приведу несколько интересных фактов о Шекспире в целом и пьесе (написанной, кстати, в начале 17-го века) в частности:

Думаю, эта книга также не нуждается в представлении - многие читали этот роман на русском, еще более многие смотрели фильм с ТЕМ САМЫМ кадром (см.выше).

I never saw this great-uncle but I’m supposed to look like him—with special reference to the rather hard-boiled painting that hangs in Father’s office. I graduated from New Haven in 1915, just a quarter of a century after my father, and a little later I participated in that delayed Teutonic migration known as the Great War. I enjoyed the counter-raid so thoroughly that I came back restless. Instead of being the warm center of the world the middle-west now seemed like the ragged edge of the universe—so I decided to go east and learn the bond business. Everybody I knew was in the bond business so I supposed it could support one more single man. All my aunts and uncles talked it over as if they were choosing a prep-school for me and finally said, ‘Why—yees’ with very grave, hesitant faces. Father agreed to finance me for a year and after various delays I came east, permanently, I thought, in the spring of twenty-two.
The practical thing was to find rooms in the city but it was a warm season and I had just left a country of wide lawns and friendly trees, so when a young man at the office suggested that we take a house together in a commuting town it sounded like a great idea. He found the house, a weather beaten cardboard bungalow at eighty a month, but at the last minute the firm ordered him to Washington and I went out to the country alone. I had a dog, at least I had him for a few days until he ran away, and an old Dodge and a Finnish woman who made my bed and cooked breakfast and muttered Finnish wisdom to herself over the electric stove.
