Продолжаем рубрику, “открытую” на прошлой неделе - что почитать представителям трех основных уровней изучения английского, Elementary - Intermediate - Advanced (начальный - средний - продвинутый).
Надеемся, материалы, опубликованные на прошлой неделе, пришлись вам по вкусу и оказались полезны. Кто-то, вероятно, уже начал читать эти книги, кто-то отложил их “на ближайшее будущее, как только появится время”. С этой недели мы постараемся подбирать все три книги в определенном жанре.
Начнём с приключений: потому что, откровенно говоря, что может быть более захватывающим, чем хороший приключенческий роман?))
“Вокруг Света за 80 Дней” — старые добрые приключения Жюля Верна
для тех, кому этот роман в новинку):
“Around the world in 80 days” - известнейший приключенческий роман французского писателя Жюля Верна, повествующий о путешествии вокруг света эксцентричного и флегматичного англичанина Филеаса Фогга и его слуги - француза Жана Паспарту. Герой романа, Филеас Фогг, побился об заклад, что сумеет обогнуть земной шар с запада на восток в срок не более 80 дней. Путешествие Фогга начинается в Англии, далее он отправляется во Францию, Египет, Индию, Китай, Японию, Америку. По пути ему встречается множество опасностей, и Фогг не раз проявляет мужество и находчивость: в качестве средств передвижения он использует поезда, пароходы и даже слона, подвергается нападению индейцев, спасает от смерти прекрасную индийскую принцессу.

In 1872, the Reform Club in London's Pall Mall was a club for men only. Phileas Fogg went to the Preform Club every day. He left his house at 7 Savile Row at 11.30 in the morning and walked to the club. He had his lunch and his dinner there. He read the papers at the club, and he played cards. He left late in the evening and walked back to Savile Row. He went to bed at midnight.
Phileas Fogg was a cold man. He didn't talk much, and nobody knew much about him. But everything in his life had to be right. His washing water had to be at 31°C — not 30°C and not 32°C.
At 9.37 on the morning of 2nd October 1872 his servant, James Forster, brought him water at 30°C, not 31°C. So this servant had to go. Phileas Fogg sat at home in his Savile Row house. He waited for his new servant.
The new servant came. He was about thirty years old.
'You are French,' said Phileas Fogg,'and your name is John?'

Ian Fleming “Live and Let Die”, a James Bond book
Short description:

An extract from the fist chapter:
One morning, James Bond was called to the office of his boss, M, head of the British Secret Service. Miss Moneypenny, M’s private secretary, gave Bond a warm smile when he arrived.
‘007 is here now, Sir,’ she said into the intercom on her desk.
‘Send him in,’ came the reply.
Bond knocked and walked into M’s office. M was sitting behind a large leather-topped desk. A reading light made a pool of light across the desk. The rest of the room was darkened by the London fog outside the windows.
‘Good morning, 007,’ said M. ‘Sit down.’
Bond sat in the chair which faced M across the desk.
‘Have you ever seen one of these?’ M took a gold coin from his pocket and pushed it halfway across the desk towards Bond.
Bond picked it up and turned it over in his hand. ‘No,’ he said. ‘But it’s worth about five hundred pounds, perhaps . ..’
‘Fifteen hundred,’ said M. ‘It’s an English coin, of course. A Rose Noble of Edward the Fourth.’ He took more gold coins from his pocket and dropped them on the desk in front of Bond - Spanish, French and Dutch coins. ‘They’re worth a lot of money just as gold, but much more to people who collect coins. If you take a look, you’ll notice that they were all made before 1650. Bloody Morgan, the pirate, was Governor and Commander in Chief of Jamaica from 1675 to 1688. These coins are almost certainly part of Morgan’s treasure.
Cheryl Strayed “Wild”

The trees were tall, but I was taller, standing above them on a steep mountain slope in northern California. Moments before, I’d removed my hiking boots and the left one had fallen into those trees, first catapulting into the air when my enormous backpack toppled onto it, then skittering across the gravelly trail and flying over the edge. It bounced off of a rocky outcropping several feet beneath me before disappearing into the forest canopy below, impossible to retrieve. I let out a stunned gasp, though I’d been in the wilderness thirty-eight days and by then I’d come to know that anything could happen and that everything would. But that doesn’t mean I wasn’t shocked when it did. My boot was gone. Actually gone.
I clutched its mate to my chest like a baby, though of course it was futile. What is one boot without the other boot? It is nothing. It is useless, an orphan forevermore, and I could take no mercy on it. It was a big lug of a thing, of genuine heft, a brown leather Raichle boot with a red lace and silver metal fasts. I lifted it high and threw it with all my might and watched it fall into the lush trees and out of my life...
